The Evidence-Informed Health Policies Unit (EIHPU) was created in 2017 in the Health Technology Assessment and Evidence-based Health Department of the Health Planning Division of Chile’s Ministry of Health. The Unit promotes the systematic use of scientific evidence in the formulation of health policies and believes that evidence-informed decisions can strengthen policies and positively impact the health of Chile’s population.

With support from the World Health Organization (WHO), the Unit is part of the Evidence-Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet), an initiative that seeks to improve health policies and inform decision-making with the best available evidence.

In the context of the PEERSS partnership, the Evidence-Informed Health Policies Unit has carried out several activities to promote evidence-informed decision-making, especially during COVID-19.

PEERSS partners from Chile will contribute to more transparent and participatory evidence-informed social policy formulation and raise awareness about the usefulness of evidence-informed decision-making tools and resources to key stakeholders

With PEERSS support, the Evidence-Informed Health Policies Unit has:

Supported the National Childhood Obesity Plan 2020-2030 by providing scientific evidence to formulate different strategies to address childhood obesity.

Prepared rapid syntheses related to COVID-19.

Identifying organizations that can support the implementation of a rapid response service model.

Strengthened networks outside of the health sector.

Enhanced the evidence ecosystem at the local level.

Currently, the team is working on:

Developing a policy brief on strategies to encourage healthy eating.

Elaborating guidelines to conduct citizen panels and policy dialogues adapted to the local environment.

In the future, the Evidence-Informed Health Policies Unit will:

Convene citizen panels and policy dialogues.

Establish strategic alliances with non-health sector actors.

Promote collaborative learning in evidence gap maps.
