Partner team overview

Instituto Veredas (Veredas Institute) is a Brazilian nonprofit that aims to bring awareness to public policymakers, universities and society about the importance of evidence-informed policymaking (EIP).

It believes that every Brazilian citizen can have their fundamental rights guaranteed through a shared effort involving civil society, universities, and governments. Veredas has been a part of the World Health Organization’s Evidence-Informed Policy Network (EVIPNet) since 2016 and focuses on health, education, labor market inclusion, human rights, and citizen security.

Fiocruz Brasilia is a prominent health science and technology institute in Latin America that works to increase dialogue on public health topics, promote health and social development, generate and disseminate scientific and technological knowledge, and be an agent of citizenship.

These overarching goals guide the actions of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz), under the Ministry of Health.

The Social Policy and Research Department/Codeplan is a public agency linked to the Secretary of Economy that produces statistics and research on the Federal District in Brazil.

Its Social Policy and Research Department focuses on issues such as gender, people with disabilities, children, homeless populations, youth, older adults, and other vulnerable groups. It also delivers studies in response to demand from policymakers, such as research on policy implementation, impact evaluation, and knowledge translation studies. Codeplan also produces studies on urban and environmental policies and public sector economics.

With funding and support from the Partnership for Evidence and Equity in Responsive Social Systems, the Instituto Veredas research team has made contributions to the field of evidence-informed policy-making, and supported systems-level changes that influence policymaking.

To date, the team’s activities include:

Working alongside the Federal District’s judiciary to produce a rapid review and evidence-synthesis on pre-trial detention.

Producing an evidence synthesis that highlights different ways to mitigate stigma against ex-prisoners and their families with broad stakeholder and citizen consultation, in partnership with the Brazilian National Council of Justice.

Helping inform national and subnational governments’ and civil society organizations’ response to COVID-19 by developing and translating rapid reviews on key-social policies.

Launching an Equity-Motivated Brazilian Coalition for Evidence (EMBraCE).

Going forward, the team will:

Continue to collaborate with partners in Brazil to develop knowledge translation products on COVID-19 for the health sector and other sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The team will also continue to join-up country-level ecosystems of policy-supporting organizations and work to expand its dialogue at the federal and state level by:

5

Producing rapid reviews and holding evidence-to-decision workshops.

5

Holding workshops and providing mentoring on knowledge translation methodology and rapid response service tailoring.

5

Strengthening the regional community of practice, by working alongside other countries from Latin America and the Caribbean (e.g., Colombia and Chile) in capacity building and knowledge-sharing activities.

Evidence gap maps on alternative medicine

The goal of this publication is to systematize the scientific evidence on Traditional, Complementary, and Integrative Medicine (TCIM) through evidence maps. The maps aim to supporting health professionals, decision-makers, and researchers in the construction of evidence-based health actions. The evidence maps present, in a matrix of interventions and outcomes, an overview and a graphic synthesis of the evidence on interventions of TCIM-related medical systems and therapeutic methods for specific health problems.

How to promote young people’s access to the labor market

As the global labor market transitions due to structural changes in production systems, young people are experiencing greater challenges when seeking work. An increasingly competitive market makes it hard for inexperienced young people to access jobs that offer fair wages and safe conditions. This synthesis discusses the research made available on the insertion of young people into the labor market.

How to promote gender equality in the labor market

Among the gender disparities in our society, some of the most notable consequences can be found in the professional field. Studies show that women, even with higher levels of education than men, have lower chances of getting a job, have restricted access to elective political positions, have less participation in management positions and lower salaries than males. This synthesis of evidence discusses several options of approaching the problem, including the formation of women's cooperative groups and professional training.

How to reduce school dropout

This synthesis collects evidence of interventions that have had an impact on school dropout rates. The systematic reviews consider intervention options to reduce dropout rates in basic education at the elementary and high school level, but also seek to increase enrollment, school attendance and grade completion rates.

Guidelines for developing evidence synthesis

Scientific knowledge must inform the public policymaking process in order to provide the best quality of life for citizens, yet research is largely disregarded in health management. The guidelines listed in this document explain how to bring together the best scientific evidence at all levels and use the information to address health priorities while considering benefits, potential harms, costs, equity and more.
